Back in the old days it was a bunch of strong humans with weapons going out to hunt and the weak ones (women and children) hiding out. So when a lion encountered a human it encountered a whole bunch of them out looking for blood. I'd say those animals have learned that groups of humans are dangerous, either from being attacked themselves or seeing a tribe bring down a god damn elephant.
